Binance Hit by Record $6.3 Billion Crypto Heist in Biggest Hack in History

Binance Hit by Record $6.3 Billion Crypto Heist

The cryptocurrency industry has been rocked by an unprecedented security breach after hackers moved approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets from wallets belonging to Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, in what blockchain investigators describe as the biggest cryptocurrency theft ever recorded. The October 29 attack has triggered an international scramble to track and freeze the stolen funds, while investigators have pointed towards an elite North Korean hacking unit as the suspected force behind the operation.

The scale of the incident has sent shockwaves through global financial markets, raising fresh concerns about the security of digital assets held on centralised cryptocurrency exchanges. According to US-based blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, approximately $6.36 billion was transferred from Binance-associated wallets across 10 different blockchain networks, with the majority of the transactions taking place within a remarkably short window of around 20 minutes.

The figure would dwarf the previous record-breaking cryptocurrency theft, the February 2025 Bybit hack, in which attackers stole approximately $1.5 billion in digital assets. The latest incident therefore represents a significant escalation in the scale of cryptocurrency-related cybercrime, demonstrating how quickly sophisticated attackers can move enormous sums through interconnected blockchain networks.

Binance acknowledged the security incident on Thursday, October 29, saying its preliminary investigation suggested that an attacker had potentially gained access through a compromised laptop belonging to one of its DevOps engineers. According to the exchange, the compromised device may have enabled the attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.

The company said its security team was investigating the full attack pathway, while emphasising that there was no evidence that wallet private keys had been leaked. Binance also temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals as a precautionary measure, revoked the affected address authorisation and began working with law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence companies to trace the funds.

The exchange has pledged to cover all losses using its own resources and its emergency asset fund, insisting that customer funds remain safe. Its response is intended to reassure millions of users who depend on the platform to store, purchase and trade digital currencies.

The suspected involvement of North Korea has added an even more troubling dimension to the incident. TRM Labs attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, an elite hacking unit associated with North Korea, saying its conclusion was based on extensive on-chain and off-chain intelligence. The firm expressed high confidence in its assessment, identifying similarities between the Binance incident and previous cryptocurrency thefts linked to North Korean cyber operations.

Chainalysis, another prominent blockchain intelligence company, also indicated a high level of confidence in North Korean involvement. Its investigators have been monitoring the movement of the affected assets across multiple blockchain networks, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The attribution is particularly significant given North Korea’s history of cryptocurrency-related cybercrime. Its hacking groups have repeatedly been accused of targeting financial institutions, cryptocurrency exchanges and decentralised finance platforms to obtain digital assets. The stolen funds have been identified by international investigators as a potential source of revenue for the heavily sanctioned country.

However, the allegations have not yet been independently established through a completed law enforcement investigation. North Korea has previously denied accusations of involvement in cyberattacks, and the precise identity of the individuals responsible for the Binance breach remains unconfirmed.

Meanwhile, cryptocurrency companies and blockchain security researchers have been racing to prevent the attackers from moving the funds beyond recovery. Approximately $3 billion worth of affected assets had been frozen through coordinated efforts involving Binance and other industry participants, according to reports published on Friday.

Stablecoin issuers, including Tether and Circle, have played a particularly important role in the response. Unlike decentralised cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, certain centrally issued stablecoins can be frozen by their issuers when suspicious transactions are identified. This has allowed companies to restrict the movement of some assets associated with the attack.

However, recovering the remaining cryptocurrency presents a considerably more difficult challenge. Digital currencies can be transferred across multiple blockchain networks, exchanged through decentralised platforms and moved through complex financial arrangements designed to obscure their origins. Once assets are converted into cryptocurrencies without a central authority capable of freezing them, investigators face additional obstacles in preventing their eventual withdrawal.

The financial markets have already begun reacting to the incident. Bitcoin and Ether experienced significant declines following news of the breach, reflecting renewed concerns about the security of cryptocurrency holdings and the broader risks associated with centralised exchanges. Binance’s native BNB token also came under pressure as investors assessed the potential implications for the platform.

The incident has once again exposed a fundamental vulnerability within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Although blockchain technology provides transparent and publicly verifiable transaction records, the platforms responsible for holding and managing customers’ digital assets remain potential targets for sophisticated cyberattacks.

Binance, which was co-founded by Changpeng Zhao in 2017, rapidly developed into the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platform. Its enormous global user base and substantial assets under custody have made it one of the most influential companies in the digital asset industry. Consequently, a security incident of this magnitude extends far beyond the exchange itself, potentially affecting investor confidence across the entire cryptocurrency market.

For now, investigators are focused on tracing the remaining funds, identifying those responsible and determining precisely how the attackers managed to execute withdrawals on such an extraordinary scale. Binance has promised to release a more detailed account of the incident once its investigation is complete.

The $6.3 billion breach is more than another entry in the growing list of cryptocurrency hacks. It represents a stark warning about the vulnerabilities of an industry that increasingly handles enormous amounts of global wealth. As the investigation continues, the central question is no longer simply how much cryptocurrency was affected, but whether the world’s largest digital asset platforms can adequately protect the financial infrastructure on which millions of investors now depend.
