Apple’s iPhone Duo Faces New Hinge Controversy as Users Report Fresh Problems

    iPhone Duo hinge controversy

Apple’s ambitious entry into the foldable smartphone market is facing another wave of scrutiny as early iPhone Duo owners report fresh problems involving the device’s hinge and internal display. Just days after reports of cracked screens raised concerns about the durability of Apple’s first foldable iPhone, new user complaints about a seemingly bulging hinge and unusual purple display artefacts have added another layer to the controversy. While the emerging reports have prompted questions about what some users are calling “Hingegate,” it may still be too early to conclude that Apple’s foldable has a widespread manufacturing problem.

The latest concerns surfaced in two Reddit posts highlighted by PhoneArena on October 29, adding to the growing discussion surrounding the iPhone Duo’s first-generation hardware. One user shared photographs suggesting that the phone’s hinge had begun to protrude or develop an unusual bulge. According to the user’s account, the change was initially difficult to notice but gradually became more apparent over time.

The owner reportedly contacted Apple Support in search of a solution but was dissatisfied with the options presented. According to the Reddit post, the customer was told they could pursue an AppleCare+ claim involving a $99 charge or seek a replacement device if one was available at a nearby Apple Store. The user later claimed that a retail store considered the visible hinge deformation cosmetic in the absence of a cracked display and suggested returning if the screen subsequently developed problems.

The account has not been independently verified, and neither the exact cause of the reported deformation nor Apple’s assessment of that particular device has been publicly established. Nevertheless, the incident has intensified discussions about whether the iPhone Duo’s folding mechanism can withstand the demands of everyday use.

A second Reddit post has raised separate concerns about the device’s inner display. A short video shared by another owner appears to show purple lines and square-shaped visual artefacts appearing in different areas of the screen while scrolling. The available footage offers little information about how the problem developed, whether the handset had sustained accidental damage or whether it resulted from a hardware or software issue.

The uncertainty surrounding these reports is important. Although photographs and videos of malfunctioning devices can quickly attract attention online, they do not establish how frequently the same problems occur across the wider customer base. PhoneArena itself noted that it remains unclear whether the reported issues indicate a broader design weakness or isolated cases involving individual devices.

The latest complaints arrive against the backdrop of an earlier display controversy that has already placed Apple’s first foldable smartphone under pressure. Shortly after the device became available internationally, several owners began sharing photographs of cracked inner screens, with some reports suggesting damage near the central folding mechanism after only a short period of use.

Apple subsequently acknowledged that a small number of iPhone Duo units were experiencing inner-display problems. In a statement reported by Reuters on October 26, the company said affected customers should contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple did not disclose the precise cause of the problem or provide a figure for the number of affected devices.

The company’s response was significant because it confirmed that at least some of the reported display issues were genuine rather than entirely speculative social media claims. However, Apple’s description of the problem as affecting a small number of units also suggests that the company is not publicly treating the situation as a confirmed widespread hardware failure.

The possible relationship between the hinge mechanism and the display problems has attracted particular attention from repair specialists. According to Reuters, iFixit examined teardown footage, patents and CT scans to construct a three-dimensional simulation of the iPhone Duo’s hinge. Its analysis suggested that damage reported by users appeared to cluster near a display cable and a central support bar beneath the screen.

The repair specialists proposed that the support bar might fail to move sufficiently clear of the display as the phone folds, potentially creating a concentrated stress point. However, this remains a technical theory rather than a confirmed explanation from Apple. The company has not publicly endorsed iFixit’s assessment of the mechanism.

Interestingly, iFixit’s analysis also identified a positive aspect of Apple’s design: the iPhone Duo received praise for its repairability, with the company describing it as the most repairable foldable phone it had tested. That finding provides a more complicated picture than the idea that Apple’s first foldable is simply a failed hardware experiment.

Apple’s challenge is particularly important because foldable smartphones involve engineering compromises that conventional slab-style devices largely avoid. Their flexible displays, moving hinges, protective layers and internal support structures must work together through repeated opening and closing. A weakness in any of these components can potentially affect the entire device, making long-term durability one of the most important considerations for consumers entering the foldable market.

The iPhone Duo also represents a major strategic move for Apple. The company is entering a category in which Samsung and other manufacturers have already spent years refining folding mechanisms, flexible displays and multitasking experiences. For Apple, the appeal of a foldable iPhone lies not simply in offering a screen that opens into a larger format, but in bringing its hardware, software and wider ecosystem together in a device that feels sufficiently polished to justify its premium positioning.

That opportunity has not disappeared because of a handful of early complaints. Apple’s foldable has attracted considerable attention, and demand during its initial release was strong enough for online orders to sell out quickly, according to Reuters. Manufacturing complexity and limited initial inventory have also contributed to supply constraints, suggesting that consumer interest remains substantial despite the emerging controversy.

The company’s response could ultimately prove more important than the initial reports themselves. During the original Galaxy Fold controversy in 2019, Samsung faced widespread criticism after early review units experienced screen failures. The company delayed the launch, revised the device and eventually brought it back to market. That episode demonstrated how serious durability problems can damage consumer confidence, but also how a manufacturer can recover through engineering improvements and a transparent response.

Apple now faces a similar test, although the scale and underlying causes of the reported iPhone Duo problems remain uncertain. Its decision to acknowledge inner-display issues and offer replacements to affected customers is an important first step. What remains unclear is whether the newer hinge complaints will lead to further action or whether they will remain isolated experiences.

For customers still waiting for their iPhone Duo, the reports may understandably create hesitation. A premium foldable smartphone is a significant purchase, and buyers expect its hinge and display to withstand ordinary daily handling. Anyone already experiencing unusual hinge deformation, screen lines or cracking should contact Apple Support rather than attempting to repair or force the mechanism themselves.

For now, calling the controversy “Hingegate” may be premature. The latest reports deserve attention, particularly when considered alongside Apple’s acknowledgement of inner-display problems, but there is not yet enough independently verified evidence to establish a widespread hinge defect.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone may have stumbled during its introduction, but its long-term prospects will depend on what happens next. If the company can identify the causes, address affected units and demonstrate that the problems are limited rather than structural, the iPhone Duo could still find a loyal audience. If similar complaints continue to emerge, however, the controversy could become a much bigger test of Apple’s reputation for premium hardware quality.
